comment Academia: How much income do you make as a teacher's assistant?
@Mark Rogers: Well, I think that salaries in academia are definitely on-topic. But this particular question is too narrow and specific, and vague too, because it is location dependent and the location is not specified. So it's on topic, but not a good question.

comment Spanish Language: Is Castillian a dialect of Spanish, or another language?
@Marek: Sorry but I disagree. I imagine you are aware that Castillian is another name for "Spanish from Spain", right? Given this, this question is totally about the Spanish language. It is asking about the relationship of the Spanish language to other languages or dialects.

comment Spanish Language: Is Castillian a dialect of Spanish, or another language?
@Marek: How can this be "not a language question"?

comment Spanish Language: If I've mastered Spanish, will it be easier for me to learn Portuguese or Italian?
This is clearly off-topic. This is a site about Spanish; the question is asking about other languages.

comment Academia: Where can I find information about grants and loans in [country name]?
@badp: Not at all; in that case, make it explicit as well. But loans in general are off-topic, definitely.

comment Academia: When was the first PhD given out?
@Mark Rogers: History questions are OK with me, but I don't see this one in particular as a major contributor towards the goals of this site. I get your point though.

comment Academia: Are research papers hard to read?
Bad example: this is terribly subjective. Hard for whom?

comment Academia: When looking for boarding schools, would it be better to go with ones with single dorms, or dorms with roommates?
I don't think this is related to academia at all; it's just about common sense.
Jan

comment Academia: How much income do you make as a teacher's assistant?
Not a good example: highly dependent on country and even city.

comment Academia: I got an offer from [Company] to publish my dissertation as a book if I give them money. Is it legitimate or a scam?
I find the question poorly worded. How am I supposed to know whether the offer that you received is legitimate or not? It could be either! A better way to put it would be "How can I make sure that the offer <...> is legitimate?"

comment Academia: Does the [University of Georgia] have a bus system or other form of mass transit?
I find this too localised (very few people would benefit) and of little relevance to the academic world.

comment Academia: What is the historical acceptance rate for [conference]?
@Charles: I think you can get an answer faster by checking with the conference organisers or proceedings.

comment Academia: Where can I find information about grants and loans in [country name]?
If you mean research grants, I suggest you edit the question to make it explicit.
Jan

comment Academia: For what do administrators look when evaluating applications for tenure-track faculty positions?
Not a good example: that would vary depending on the criteria. It is frequent that criteria are set by staff recruitment boards or other governing bodies. These criteria are usually publicised with the position call. There is no universal answer to this question.

comment Academia: What is the visa process for a 1 year postdoc application in USA?
Not a good example: too localised to be representative of this site, and you'd find the answer faster (and it'd be more reliable) by asking the appropriate department rather than asking people here.

comment Academia: I would like to do research on <argument>. Where can I find research groups working on it?
@Stefano: I suggest you edit the question and replace "topic" for "argument".
Jan
27
comment Academia: When was the first PhD given out?
I thnk this is not a good example: not exactly off-topic, but of anecdotal importance. I don't think this should be selected as one of the five representative great on-topic questions for this site.

comment Academia: What housing services does <institute> provide for a temporary stay?
Bad example: ask the institute, don't ask here.
Jan
27
comment Academia: How do you organize your references: do you read PDF files onscreen or print them and highlight by pen?
This is off-topic: it's about tools for document management, not about academia.
Jan

comment Academia: As a married university student with a newborn baby, are there any additional grants available for people in my situation?
Not a good example, because this is highly dependent on your country and even region within country.

comment Spanish Language: From what Arabic word of phrase did the Spanish toponym [Albacete] derive? What does it mean?
@Jaime: I think it's much better now. Removed my vote.

revised Spanish Language: How is Spanish related (linguistically and socially) to the other languages spoken in Spain such as Galician, Catalan and Basque?

comment Spanish Language: From what Arabic word of phrase did the Spanish toponym [Albacete] derive? What does it mean?
I think this is not a good example, because there are potentially hundreds or thousands of them. Do you want a list of them all?

comment Spanish Language: What qualifications of Spanish language usage are most widely recognised internationally?
Are you referring to general qualifications (engineering, law, etc.) obtained in Spain, or to qualifications about the Spanish language? I suggest you clarify in the question title.

comment Spanish Language: How is Spanish related (linguistically and socially) to the other languages spoken in Spain such as Galician, Catalan and Basque?
By "related" I am not referring to linguistic relationship only; I think that social and cultural relationships are in scope as well, since this site is about Spanish Language and Usage. That cannot be easily found in Google.
