If metadata is so important...why does GIS software make it so difficult to create/edit/export metadata? [closed]

It was closed as part of an automated migration of off-topic to close votes on September 29, 2011.

I don't think is is off-topic. Metadata generation is a big part of GIS work. Actually most of SDI (Spatial Data Infrastructure) organizations around the globe focus alot on metadata. – George Jun 6 '10 at 18:09
3
What's the purpose of the question? Is the op. seeking information, or trying to insight an argument.. and is this a criticism of GIS software in general, or an annoyance with a particular product? I don't think this is a good example question in it's current form. – Ti M Jun 7 '10 at 23:02
In that I agree. – George Jun 8 '10 at 21:58

How do I install ArcView 9.3 on Vista?
added by George Jun 1 '10 at 21:37

For me, this question is too much of a technical support question - the task is not fundamentally a GIS task, it just happens to be GIS software. – Matt Parker Jun 2 '10 at 1:33
first, uninstall the previous version. second, install 9.3 by introduction – hmfly Jun 3 '10 at 6:25

What's your favorite font for a map legend?
added by Sean Jun 3 '10 at 19:43
link
1
A better question would be, "What fonts are appropriate for legends in [certain circumstances]?" But I think font choice, color schemes, etc. are pretty fundamental to making good maps. – Matt Parker Jun 3 '10 at 21:06
@Matt Parker, I think you're right, this is completely dependent on the message that you are trying to convey in the finished article, ie. there are different fonts that suit different styles. I think I'd immediately point someone at TypeBrewer - typebrewer.org – Ti M Jun 4 '10 at 10:39
subjective and argumentative. – George Jun 4 '10 at 19:27

Well I do think it is subjective, it isn't off topic. Mind you I think it would get closed pretty quick if the real site was open. – Nathan W Jun 2 '10 at 11:07
1
I don't think it's about GIS programming. It's more about trolling or something. So it doesn't meet the goals of the real site. So it's offtopic. – Agemen Jun 2 '10 at 13:00
True, True. I'm happy with that thinking. – Nathan W Jun 2 '10 at 13:12
A good answer could list powerful Java Spatial libraries though. – geographika Jun 3 '10 at 19:38
Not a good example; should be closed as argumentative in tone and intention. – Michael Todd Jun 5 '10 at 3:54

This is controversial (5-5 at this time) can people please comment – Good Person Jun 3 '10 at 18:24
I think this is relevant because the answer helps expand the normal conceptualization of how geolocation can be accomplished (and it's pretty damn cool, too). – Matt Parker Jun 3 '10 at 21:13
Hi Steve This is not new and would take a bit of time to explain. all wifi have mac addresses but the are not unique and are constantly transmitting this mac addy therefore if you know a addy and where it is you can adjust the database accordingly also does gogle have access to your account and what do you have in it. So i suppose we can go on about the ability to capture data from different accounts and keep refining it to we get a set point. we can support this with cell tower data as well Sunnie – Sunnie Jun 3 '10 at 21:48
Hi Sunnie. None of the questions here are supposed to have answers yet. These questions are about defining what is ON or OFF topic for a GIS Q&A site. – Steve Jun 3 '10 at 23:55
Aside from the motivation for asking a question like this, the main problem I have is that there are so many different ways to answer it and so many contributing factors. After all, a comprehensive answer would include all kinds of information about IP geolocation, cell triangulation, user contributed GPS information, etc. I guess the real question is whether this site be a replacement for Wikipedia, or should we be looking for more technical, in-depth questions? Personally I'd go for the latter. – Ti M Jun 4 '10 at 8:47

I think that such a site would be a great place to find out the differences between the major coordinate systems. Even if something can be googled, there are aspects of it that might be better discussed in such a site. – Adam Davis Jun 2 '10 at 2:43
1
Gosh, I am not sure that we should put ourselves above such a question. It is a fundamental acronym used in projections that can be very easily answered. I do not see why fundamentals and acronyms should be excluded, especially if it means not having to repeatedly explain the meaning of simple definitions. – marsofearth Jun 2 '10 at 6:35

I don't know - if someone won't even google for "define UTM", how are they ever going to find the question on the Stack Exchange site? Eh, clearly this battle is lost, but I still think this is a bit too simple and concrete. – Matt Parker Jun 2 '10 at 23:37

I think all geocaching questions should be offtopic. Maybe a separate stack-exchange for geocaching? It is not related to GIS practice, although GIS questions for use with Geocaching should be okay, "e.g. how can i display these gps points on a printed map"? or something. – fmark Jun 5 '10 at 2:08

support question or read the manual – iant Jun 3 '10 at 15:45
I'd be inclined to agree, unless the question were to be rephrased to ask about a more specific set of circumstances using MapInfo 6.5. Seems similar to area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/1425/… which has been voted as off-topic. – Ti M Jun 3 '10 at 16:17

How to calculate between two points in <XYZ> software would be a better question? – George Jun 2 '10 at 11:13
Because it would be related to a technology, I think so. But indeed, the question is not trivial ^_^ – Agemen Jun 2 '10 at 13:02
Maybe an important point behind this is, it's a site for GIS not G!? – Steve Jun 3 '10 at 12:00
Geography is just as important as GIS. GIS is a tool for Geography, but geographers and GIS experts are no Atlases. It's a simple question that should be found out on Google Maps or other sources. – George Jun 4 '10 at 19:52
There is no single answer, the question needs qualification with regards to mode of transport, method of measurement, etc. – mdsumner Jun 5 '10 at 2:19
