I don't think is is off-topic. Metadata generation is a big part of GIS work. Actually most of SDI (Spatial Data Infrastructure) organizations around the globe focus alot on metadata. – George Jun 6 '10 at 18:09

A better question would be, "What fonts are appropriate for legends in [certain circumstances]?" But I think font choice, color schemes, etc. are pretty fundamental to making good maps. – Matt Parker Jun 3 '10 at 21:06
@Matt Parker, I think you're right, this is completely dependent on the message that you are trying to convey in the finished article, ie. there are different fonts that suit different styles. I think I'd immediately point someone at TypeBrewer - typebrewer.org – Ti M Jun 4 '10 at 10:39
