An alternative name in the WP article for Computational Science is Scientific Computing. – Kaveh Apr 26 '11 at 8:35
@KEvin Vermeer: The description should at least be changed to reflect the merge. HPC is not only about science. – Alexis Dufrenoy May 27 '11 at 8:18

Is there a CUDA library implementing SVD?
added by mbq Feb 3 '11 at 1:09

While the subject material is highly on-topic, the question is not great: It's a shopping question, and will be outdated. Better to ask and answer "How do I evaluate libraries for implementing SVD on CUDA". Upvoting nonetheless. – Kevin Vermeer May 26 '11 at 17:19

I'm unsure about this one. It's not traditional HPC, it's not motivated by a particular computational technique. I guess it's still on topic, but it would be on topic for SO. Do we really want this in our top ten qns? – Charles Stewart Feb 17 '11 at 6:25

Why is leapfrog integration better than Verlet integration for molecular dynamics simulations?
added by mbq Feb 3 '11 at 1:01

This could be on maths.sx. – Charles Stewart Feb 3 '11 at 1:20
@Charles Not physical implications, like velocities and positions "in phase". – mbq Feb 14 '11 at 21:50
Wait, why is this OT? Discussion of integrator algorithms is very relevant in molecular dynamics, and probably other computational fields as well. – AcidFlask Feb 21 '11 at 5:52
This would have been a good example if it were more descriptive, e.g. "Why is leapfrog integration better than Verlet integration for molecular dynamics simulations?" – las3rjock Mar 5 '11 at 22:10
@las3rjock Fair enough. – mbq Mar 5 '11 at 23:12

Is the role of this site the implementation of computational physics - or can theory be discussed too? Do computations have to be HEAVY - or are simple computational physics algorithms legitimate topics. (Free energy minimisation often isn't demanding computationally - its just hard to setup). – Tom May 6 '11 at 9:42

off-topic example for mistaking this for Computer science (I know, it'd be probably too basic there, too) – Tobias Kienzler Mar 23 '11 at 14:08

Well, this was intended as an on-topic example of pure HPC problem (although maybe not too demanding). – mbq Feb 14 '11 at 21:50

Maybe it just needs to be reworded? How about something like "When using PBS (Portable Batch System), what does adding -A to the command line do?" I didn't know what PBS was until I googled it, but maybe everyone who does HPC knows. – celion Feb 19 '11 at 9:59
Most clusters in HPC centers do use some kind of PBS to handle tasks, so most people doing calculations there suffer from its specific issues; thus I think it is a good technical topic for this site. – mbq Mar 5 '11 at 23:17
