@herzmeister: Perhaps the title should be " Audio recording and production "? – raven May 28 '10 at 13:46

+1 for title change. Audio production for video seems to be getting unanimous support (see gunshot / explosion questions, both +6 -0 right now) – Chris Lawlor May 28 '10 at 13:56

How far should a mic be from the drum?
added by Jeffroe Bodine Jun 18 '10 at 21:13

More specificity desired. First, which drum? Second, what type of mic? Third, what sound are you trying for? – Bribles Jun 23 '10 at 20:57
Agreed, this is exactly the type of question you'd expect to see on this site, if it specified the type of drum, type of mic, and the desired sound characteristics. – harpo Jun 26 '10 at 8:10

Is the Edirol FA-66 compatible with Windows 7?
added by herzmeister May 24 '10 at 20:05
link
"...your site should focus on pilots, not passengers; lawyers, not lawbreakers; professional photographers, not Uncle Marv with his digital point-n-shoot." It's a firewire interface - of course it's compatible with Windows 7. Or the question will go out of date once the driver becomes available. Meanwhile, google for the Edirol support page. – Kirk Broadhurst May 27 '10 at 11:14
I think it's a reasonable question, but difficult to answer objectively the way it's worded. A regular question would be something like, "Can I install the Vista drivers for XYZ in Windows 7?" and a CW-type question would be a "List of known supported operating systems for XYZ". – Aaronaught Jun 2 '10 at 19:55

How do I remove the vocals from an mp3?
added by Nik Reiman May 28 '10 at 8:13
link
Although I'm really not wild about the prospect of tons of questions like this on the site, I would still consider it valid as far as production is concerned. – Nik Reiman May 28 '10 at 9:47
I'll admit I might be missing something, but I can't imagine a context in which this is a valid (legal) thing to want to do. – Chris Lawlor May 28 '10 at 13:53
i don't think the legality is at issue here. (it would be perfectly legal to do for some CC-licensed content and any recordings in the public domain.) – quack quixote May 29 '10 at 22:59
@Chris, there are lots of people which want to make their own karaoke backing tracks for private use, and since this is a very difficult thing to achieve in the studio, music-oriented message boards are often flooded with this type of question. – Nik Reiman May 31 '10 at 7:37

What is lossy audio compression and what does it mean for my recordings?
added by Nathan Osman Jun 2 '10 at 6:27
link
Lossy audio compression? Like in 'mp3' rather than in 'Dynamic Range'? Then this would belong more to superuser or an audiophiles'/HiFi SE. Quite a beginner's question too. What does it mean for my recordings? Nothing, just don't use it for production :-> – herzmeister Jun 3 '10 at 9:03
The advantage of lossy methods over lossless methods is that in some cases a lossy method can produce a much smaller compressed file than any lossless method, while still meeting the requirements of the application. – AttilaNYC Jun 7 '10 at 1:43
I think it may be a good off-topic example. I interpret it as "Once I have a mastered recording, what will making an MP3 or WMA file out of it do to it sonically?", which sorta seems irrelevant or at least the answer wouldn't change your process. If a recording sounds acceptable through earbuds, or a car stereo, or through laptop speakers, then lossy compression shouldn't be a worry. – Bribles Jun 23 '10 at 20:28

I despise these questions, even on discussion boards. Topics like this would be very likely to come up, and should be mercilessly punted as Subjective/Argumentative. – Aaronaught Jun 3 '10 at 13:42
Same here. No gearporn questions should belong here. – Nik Reiman Jun 3 '10 at 17:08
Suggested Edit: "What frequency range should I be concerned about for monitors for my bedroom studio?" – kevtrout Jun 5 '10 at 18:44
agreed that this is too subjective, but perhaps we could allow questions like - what are the strengths & weaknesses of Alesis M1? – Mark Heath Jul 1 '10 at 15:48
I think that all decently-made studio monitors only have (very) subjective strengths and weaknesses. If you were to ask "What is the BEST pizza shop in the Bronx?", you would get thousands of different answers and different comments about the pros/cons of each one. – Vortico Jul 1 '10 at 20:36

I want to record good quality audio for my podcast like the Stack Overflow podcast or Twit. How can I set that up?
added by Jim McKeeth Jun 17 '10 at 4:49

I think recording podcasts is in many ways a whole different ball-game than what most people would think of as audio production. – Mark Pim Jun 17 '10 at 8:08
I've proposed a Podcasting Specific site – spaetzel Jun 17 '10 at 17:53
@Spaetzel & @Mark: I know Podcasting has more specific issues (RSS, Video, etc.) but it would seem like an audio recording question could be in both. If not, then it is a good opportunity to clarify if podcasting is automatically taboo and off topic. – Jim McKeeth Jun 18 '10 at 3:55

Are there any modern, inexpensive mics as as good as an SM57 for miking a snare drum?
added by chris Jun 23 '10 at 18:15

I want to say this is too basic, but dynamic mics such as the SM57 are commonly used on snares in almost all studio budgets. – Vortico Jun 23 '10 at 18:45
1
Well, the 57 is a "standard" but this is a very specific question that probably has a couple of good answers. – chris Jun 24 '10 at 16:38

This would probably be a podcasting question, but it could be from an engineer for a news program of some sort. – Bribles Jun 23 '10 at 21:34
I would consider this to relate to audio production since it could also benefit radio engineers, television audio, and interviewers. – Vortico Jun 24 '10 at 3:18

What are the pros and cons of mastering inline vs. bouncing and then mastering?
added by Tal Rotbart Jun 28 '10 at 8:18

I'd like to read this question & set of answers just to find out what this means. – Nathan DeWitt Jun 28 '10 at 12:07
1
@Nathan: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Audio_mastering – Robert Harvey Jun 28 '10 at 14:44
1
@Nathan: Mastering inline = Applying filters (compressors, limiters, etc.) on the master output channel in original sequencer file so the bounce/export/render is a 'mastered' copy Bouncing and then mastering = Bouncing/exporting/rendering from sequencer to audio file, then loading the resulting audio into a tool and applying filters – Tal Rotbart Jun 29 '10 at 5:47

How can I use Reason inside of Pro Tools?
added by herzmeister May 24 '10 at 20:08

1
Rtfm? :) If I had any votes left, I would call this off-topic. An "expert" would ask more specific questions about the subject, such as: "When using a Rewire track in Pro Tools 8, does the total latency of MIDI and output audio match that of a normal RTAS instrument?" – Vortico Jun 13 '10 at 4:16
However, the idea of StackExchange is that you cater to experts, but that doesn't mean you don't allow these types of questions. It's definitely not off-topic, but it is certainly a beginner question. however, it is also the sort of question that gets Google'd very often and will likely draw in more traffic. I would support having questions like this, even if they happen often and get closed as a duplicate. – snicker Jun 18 '10 at 14:24

I vote on topic, but if the context is doing plugin design in reaktor, synthmaker, PD, Max/MSP, etc. – Nik Reiman May 27 '10 at 11:01
1
Algorithm isn't a great word in this context, but consider the steps involved in noise reduction. It's production-related, nothing to do with programming. – Kirk Broadhurst May 27 '10 at 11:17
1
i intended this to be a 'gimme teh codez' kinda question. it would be a 'yes' if they were asking for certain presets or settings in certain tools and how to utilize them best. – herzmeister May 27 '10 at 21:08

How do I record some of the audio from my favourite TV show?
added by Jon Seigel May 28 '10 at 0:41
link
1
this is potentially on-topic. imagine a production requires some snippet of TV audio (eg, a news reporter) for inclusion as an incidental sample. at its root this is a question about importing TV audio into a production. – quack quixote May 29 '10 at 22:45
obviously, it could also be a "hey man help me make MP3s from the music on this show" question which would be off-topic -- but that difference could only be determined by context. so i'm calling this one on-topic. – quack quixote May 29 '10 at 22:47
@quack: You care about how they are going to use the information they are asking for? Won't they just game your system by re-framing the question from a professional audio perspective? – Robert Harvey Jun 2 '10 at 13:44
@Robert: it's more a matter of how they ask ... i'm just saying that sometimes the difference between ontopic and offtopic is a matter of context. granted, the audio engineer probably wouldn't refer to a source as "my favorite TV show", but if framed as "how do i record audio samples from a TV broadcast?", i think it would be ontopic. gaming isn't much of a concern. if they've reframed a question well enough that it fools the experts, it might just be a useful question to have. – quack quixote Jun 2 '10 at 16:50
For my taste, this smells off-topic. Too beginner-ish. Regardless of the TV sample being intended to be used in a production scenario or not, the targeted community of this site is tech-savvy enough to handle such things easily. Would better belong on superuser et al. – herzmeister Jun 13 '10 at 11:37

How can I change the key of an mp3 to the key of my arrangement?
added by Nik Reiman May 28 '10 at 8:19
link
This one's hard to judge just by the title. The question is impossible to answer without information about the environment - what sequencer/sampler, what tools, even what key (some you just can't match - not all keys are traditional major/minor!). Plus, different techniques would be required for different source material; in some cases you could just use a pitch shifter, other cases you might have to resample or even slice. The title implies a question that's on topic, but also way too vague. – Aaronaught Jun 3 '10 at 17:49
Very vague and ill-specified. If I had to say on or off topic from the current question, i'd say off-topic. The specification of mp3 makes me worry. Also the contents of the mp3 are of utmost importance. – Bribles Jun 23 '10 at 20:15

hmmm I think there might be a lot of questions like this. In this form, it's too general and like the Stack Overflow 'homework questions'. But if asked more specifically, like "How can I make the bass line more concise at 1:45 in this sample", why not? – herzmeister Jun 13 '10 at 12:02
1
@herz: I'd still want to close it as "too localized." It's very unlikely that somebody else will be working on a similar enough track that the answers would be helpful - and even if they were, they'd probably never know it because they'd have to go and download a sample (and $20 says that the link is broken by that time). – Aaronaught Jun 15 '10 at 18:43
I am using my last +1 for this question. This is exactly the question that we are trying to answer here. Really, aren't all other questions just less satisfactory substitutes? – harpo Jun 26 '10 at 8:21
@harpo: Absolutely not. That's equivalent to a Stack Overflow question along the lines of "please read and review these 5000 lines of code." It's exactly what we don't want. It requires answerers to go download some track and write a bunch of semi-subjective comments that don't benefit the community at all, just the person who asked it. Also, these reviews usually require a lot of back-and-forth. This is the worst possible kind of question for a Q&A site; it belongs on a discussion board. – Aaronaught Jun 26 '10 at 14:52
1
@Aaronaught, I certainly overstated my view; the question as stated is too vague, and I have retracted my vote. But suppose it were: Please tell me how I can fix [problem] in [audio sample]. While there is a limit, StackOverflow not only allows but encourages the posting of code. I guess my view is just that actual audio will sometimes be a more efficient way to communicate than words. – harpo Jun 26 '10 at 18:10
