looks like some of the upvoters should remove their votes form the 10+ and put it on them on the questions that have less than 10 votes. as we need " 22 more questions with a score of 10 or more to move to the next phase." – tgkprog Jul 7 '13 at 10:17

How is Karma in Hinduism different than the generic philosophical concept of fate?
added by Caleb Apr 12 '13 at 12:08

Interesting question with many possible answers. – DroidDev Jun 25 '13 at 11:59
@Vishwas Usually for SE sites "many possible answers" is not a good thing. Likewise "interesting" is more likely to lead to extended discussion than a canonical answer. Perhaps there is a way you could suggest to narrow this down so that it would be a good specific question? Or perhaps there really are solid definitions that somebody with good explanation skills will be able to use to provide a definitive answer? – Caleb Jun 25 '13 at 12:06
@Caleb You can easily find the proper definition of Karma in Bhagwat Gita and similarly the definition of fate can also be found, the question is interesting from my point of view and many possible answers will be there because of everyone's personal thinking about these things. Although, i assure you that you will be able to find a good answer with proper reference once this site goes around. In my opinion you don't need to narrow this down, you just need to wait for an answer with proper explanation and reference and THERE IS ONE :) – DroidDev Jun 25 '13 at 12:13
As I've commented on another question, in Hinduism nothing can be very clearly/rigidly defined like in Christianity or Islam. Hindu faith gives a lot of room for personal opinion rather than going by what a single book says. Many sources can be quoted but it's one's interpretation which gives the finishing touch. If that is not allowed here, then it'll never be possible to have a Hindiusm SE site. Need to relax the rigid rules a bit for Hinduism. – RBK Jul 9 '13 at 16:55
Lot of room for personal opinion will always be there, because most of times, in case of HINDUISM what people believe are the stories heard from there elders. It is because there are so many gospels related to religion. You will rarely find a person who has read most of these books and if you are talking about VEDAS, they are rarely found these days what originally was written, but we only find interpretations of them by others. This is one of the main reason for most of personal opinions. – DroidDev Jul 10 '13 at 12:31

This could be a truly fascinating question too. I am slightly concerned that my attempt to answer it would be too long for the replies here. I wrote a paper some time ago called "Rethinking Dumezil" which explored this topic in quite a bit of depth, looking at comparative parallels, from Scandinavia to Greece, to Rome. I think the essay ended up being about 10 pages long. – Chris Travers Apr 28 '13 at 7:06

This question is really an important one and it might well clear the doubts of many about the long prevailing ill practice that has brought many criticisms to the faith. – Dharmaputhiran Jun 30 '13 at 9:05

BTW, Mahabharata is not the holy book of Hindus. It is the 'Bhagavad Gita'. Next time around, be sure to ask the right question. – Dharmaputhiran Jun 30 '13 at 13:27
@ Dineshkumar, then can you please suggest any edit in question. – DroidDev Jul 1 '13 at 5:29
The question can be like, 'What are the actual teachings of BHAGAVAD GITA, the holy book of hindus?' – Dharmaputhiran Jul 1 '13 at 13:39
3
Technically, Hindus don't have a single holy book like the Bible or the Koran. Vedas, Puranas(Ramayan & Mahabharat), Upanishads & The Bhagavad Gita form the holy 'books'. So this question is valid. – RBK Aug 7 '13 at 15:28
