This may sound similar to board games proposal, but I think a game like Chess deserves the respect/audience of a dedicated site instead of being clubbed with Cards, Scrabble, Carrom etc. – Binoj Antony Jun 19 '10 at 12:40
12
Why does this need to be separate from the Board Games site which is already in public beta and already has a number of questions on Chess? – Brent Warner Nov 17 '10 at 18:48
13
@Brent, please read my first comment. The same logic by which you have many languages have their own proposals instead of having only one proposal named Languages and likewise for many other topics like Phone OSs (Android, iOS etc), Software (DotNetNuke, Selenium, etc), just look around to find so many examples of this. Above all there is no site where chess enthusiasts can ask questions especially for analysis etc to be answered. Even GMs/IMs can become members and help out. I cant imagine such experts or even users doing this on a generic website. – Binoj Antony Nov 18 '10 at 18:05

It might be good to have a dedicated tag like "mating-patterns" with topics addressing these: blog.chess.com/batgirl/mating-patterns-i – Jeff Moser Aug 5 '10 at 15:21

I just played this game and thought it was interesting. What could be done better? (PGN included)
added by Jeff Moser Aug 25 '10 at 14:27

I'm wondering if this would be a certain type of tag (e.g. "pgn-commentary") with perhaps a built-in viewer gadget for displaying them. The question would be the PGN as in: [Event "Immortal game"] [Site "London"] [Date "1851.??.??"] [Round "?"] [White "Anderssen,A"] [Black "Kieseritzky,L"] [Result "1-0"] 1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf4 3.Bc4 Qh4+ 4.Kf1 b5 5.Bxb5 Nf6 6.Nf3 Qh6 7.d3 Nh5 8.Nh4 Qg5 9.Nf5 c6 10.g4 Nf6 11.Rg1 cxb5 12.h4 Qg6 13.h5 Qg5 14.Qf3 Ng8 15.Bxf4 Qf6 16.Nc3 Bc5 17.Nd5 Qxb2 18.Bd6 Qxa1+ 19.Ke2 Bxg1 20.e5 Na6 21.Nxg7+ Kd8 22.Qf6+ Nxf6 23.Be7# 1-0 – Jeff Moser Aug 25 '10 at 14:29
I could also see how this could be "off-topic" since there are an infinite number of these types of questions possible. I just proposed the question because I'm sure it'd be asked eventually – Jeff Moser Aug 25 '10 at 14:41
Not off topic, but very ambiguos, subjective and argumentative. That questions are better answered by a deep analysis by PC chess engines. – Edgar Nov 17 '10 at 0:49

This basically amounts to a Google search. The answer is "yes" or "no", and would almost certainly include a link to the relevant page. – Mark C Sep 18 '10 at 3:00

I wouldn't say it's off-topic, but it has no definitive answer. – pate Aug 23 '10 at 18:58

Maybe things like this should get a place in a FAQ on the site, so you can refer new visitors to that FAQ. When you have specific questions thereafter you can ask them on the site. I think this question should be asked at least once to get the FAQ done :) – LaPingvino Oct 30 '10 at 13:20

Obviously a chess strategy question, but not enough information to answer it. Which chess program? They have different strategies built into them, the strategy to win will differ. – Dave McNulla Jul 23 '10 at 1:00

Why off-topic? It's just as relevant as asking about the oldest marathon winner. – pate Aug 23 '10 at 18:57
It's a Google question to me. – Mark C Oct 22 '10 at 20:43
@Mark C: All in this world is Google question, I find your comment off topic. Every single matter (including atomic bombs) is in search engines, if you mean that this is a 'simple question easily answered by Google', you have a bad argument. – Edgar Nov 17 '10 at 0:45
@Edgar That is a rude and petty way to discuss the matter. Looking at your accounts, you haven't been around very long (22 days on your oldest one), so perhaps you have not noticed. My "argument" is precisely what keeps StackOverflow and every other site from being overrun by Yahoo! Answers-type questions and various redundant, lazy, lazy, questions. Standard practice, although the tolerance varies from site to site. – Mark C Nov 17 '10 at 21:45

Slightly subjective. Could be better worded as "Who are the oldest competitive chess players?" or "What is the median age of a chess grandmaster?" – pate Aug 23 '10 at 18:56

@execve - good point. You could improve the question (specify this) by changing "or" to "also known as". – Wikis Aug 14 '10 at 6:49
