Photography and Photographic Editing

Launched Q&A site for professional photographers, photo editors, and serious enthusiasts.

One hope would be to incorporate communities involved in 1.0 sites such as photographr.info, as well as those from more traditional photography "message board" sites. – Jaydles Jun 1 '10 at 18:51
4
I would include photoqna.com in that as well. – adrianbanks Jun 1 '10 at 22:57

@Adam, I think the votes can speak to the wishes of the community. StackOverflow has not suffered from a mix of professional and newbie questions. There are situations (such as photojournalism) where somewhat straight-on flash is unavoidable. I'd be quite happy as a photographer of 10 years to see a succinct answer to the red-eye question, merely to complete one's knowledge on the topic. – Rog Jun 3 '10 at 22:51

At what point in retouching does a photo become a "photo illustration?"
added by John Rudy Jun 1 '10 at 20:56
link
Impossible to answer objectively. My attempt: All photographs are photo illustrations, since the photographer has already made choices about what he is framing in the shot, when to push the shutter button, what settings to use on the camera, etc. – Robert Harvey Jun 1 '10 at 21:57
1
It's probably impossible to get a "one true answer" objectively, but understand that the terms (in the newspaper world, in particular) are very different, and there are actually thresholds for where adjustment goes from a photo credit to a photo illustration credit. (I have a newspaper background ... And I remember getting my wrist slapped for crediting a home page shot "photo" when it was actually "photo illustration." :) ) – John Rudy Jun 1 '10 at 22:01

50mm f1.4 vs. f1.8? What are the advantages?

No: incomplete and vague. What are the advantages in [some specific circumstances] would belong, however. – Roger Pate Jun 3 '10 at 0:43

I think it is a good general question for people to answer should be more of a community wiki answer though. Can allow got conversation to take place about f/1.4 and f/1.8 – percent20 Jun 3 '10 at 6:42
Agree this is vague, eg. the canon 1.4 happens to be an L series lens and it shoots better shots than the 1.8, at 1.8 as well. – Sam Saffron Jun 6 '10 at 13:31

If something like this contained a request for specific critique, I.e. "why is this so horribly overexposed in this corner yet underexposed to the left" I'd consider it on topic. But general review / critique ... nah. – Tim Post Jun 4 '10 at 2:20

Probably better at SuperUser.com – Al E. Jun 2 '10 at 17:08
There is an aspect to this question that only heavy users of it will know, and may even be restricted to certain workflows. For example, I used to run actions on around 600 portraits at a time (10MB filesizes or more, sometimes) in Photoshop, and could possibly help someone asking this question. – Roger Pate Jun 2 '10 at 17:24

What is HDR?
added by Sam Saffron Jun 2 '10 at 21:53
link
1
This is on topic, HDR has been used ever since the 1800's to achieve high contrast scenes (boat on the water with a bright horizon, etc). The technique is not at all exclusive to digital, just the way its processed. – Tim Post Jun 16 '10 at 7:41

The question would have to specify more, like indoor vs outdoor, style of photography (portrait vs candid, desired "look"), lighting etc – Rog Jun 3 '10 at 0:14

Any good tutorials on how to make fat people thin in Photoshop?
added by herzmeister Jun 1 '10 at 19:42
link
2
I think this would be topical and appropriate if it were a tad less pejorative in tone: "Is there an easy way to make a subject look thinner using Photoshop?" One of Scott Kelby's books actually has a chapter on exactly this for when you catch someone at an unflattering angle. – Jaydles Jun 1 '10 at 21:50
2
It's possibly offensive and needs editing, but it's still on-topic. Fits in with all the other "how to edit to do X" questions. I would word as "how to use Photoshop to make people appear thinner?" (which includes answering straight-out rather than just giving tutorials). – Roger Pate Jun 2 '10 at 13:07
Don't forget that privileged users will still be able to edit the question to fit to the tone of the site. – herzmeister Jun 3 '10 at 10:15
