Food and Cooking

Launched Q&A site for cooks, chefs, anyone who can make a dish that can objectively be described as "mean"

Announcements

6
@Robert - the site is still being defined. I think discussing recipes, or asking how to prepare something can be acceptable for this site (though not the "what is best recipe for" kind of questions, which would be subjective). Such questions are going to come anyway, and closing them will most likely drive people away. Because like you say "ok, so it's a cooking Q&A site, but I can't discuss recipes?". If looking for a cooking site, I would go away. – Gnoupi Jun 2 '10 at 9:06

My cooking is "mean", as in cruel. – Shog9 Jun 3 '10 at 2:13
10
It's great that the site is aimed at chefs or professionals, but I think we'll have a hard time explaining to people visiting the site that their question is to basic. You still have to master the basics to be a pro. Why not have the SO attitude of 'no question is too basic'? – Ivo Flipse Jun 3 '10 at 6:37

I think this is subjective. Perhaps a question asking what would you consider when deciding between gas and electric would be more helpful. – marcnicol Jun 2 '10 at 10:38

What are the benefits of maintaining your own herb garden?
added by Robert Harvey Jun 1 '10 at 23:27
link
1
"serious about cooking" seems a bit subjective, but other than that, it's a question of personal choice. There is no "should" in such thing. I would vote to close as subjective, or off-topic simply, because the matter of cooking is what you do with them, not especially if you should cultivate them yourself? – Gnoupi Jun 2 '10 at 13:32
@Gnoupi: So again, you don't like the wording. If the wording were changed slightly, it would become a legitimate question? Something like: "Would having my own herb garden improve my cooking ability, and if so, how?" – Robert Harvey Jun 2 '10 at 13:37
@Robert - may be a better wording, but other than that, it's the fact that I see the "own herb garden" as a matter of personal choice, more than something which has an impact on cooking. But maybe I lack experience in the matter, simply. That's only my personal opinion. – Gnoupi Jun 2 '10 at 13:47
1
A less subjective form of this question would be: "How does freshness effect the flavor of herbs? Enough that I should grow my own herb garden?" Or "if I plan on cooking X nights/week for X/people, does it make sense to grow my own herb garden". As is, this question seems off topic to me. – Mike Sherov Jun 3 '10 at 22:36
1
@Robert, close, although I suppose I'm splitting hairs now. Perhaps a broader question would be "What are the benefits of cultivating my own herb garden?" – Mike Sherov Jun 4 '10 at 13:30

Depending on the ingredients, this may be a bit broad, though. I would recommend "community wiki" for such questions, since this is more about listing the possible choices, without really an answer to accept. Besides, on-topic, for me. – Gnoupi Jun 2 '10 at 13:19
I'm inclined to say this would be too localized and quite likely closed. Good example of something right in the middle, though! – Tim Post Jun 3 '10 at 16:57

too localized. not much to do with cooking – Good Person Jun 1 '10 at 19:53
Has plenty to do with Food though! – richq Jun 5 '10 at 15:29
Yes, but not a lot to do with cooking, beyond planning ahead. For instance, if you know [fruit] is in season in [x] weeks, you might contemplate a [fruit] pie, which might mean a menu change .. but its really skirting "on topic" – Tim Post Jun 5 '10 at 15:44
It also depends where you happen to live in the world, as well. So its also rather localized. – Tim Post Jun 5 '10 at 15:45

How can I get a flavor that that tastes like <some food>?
added by Good Person Jun 1 '10 at 19:54

By cooking <some food>, of course. I think this needs more detail to be acceptable. Explain why you can't just prepare <some food>. What ingredients are you restricted to using, etc. – raven Jun 1 '10 at 20:02
I'm not sure why this needs more detail? Is it not enough to ask "what foods taste similar to?" sure, it's more interesting to say "I'm vegan... What vegan food tastes like X?", but it's not more on topic, is it? – Mike Sherov Jun 3 '10 at 19:07
After thinking about this for a while, I suspect it's just a special-case of area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/1288/… - both are nominally on-topic, but unlikely to get useful answers unless further specified (butter substitutes are notoriously poor at replicating the flavor and/or texture of real butter in both frying and baking for instance... to say nothing of "fresh" uses like spreading or frosting). – Shog9 Jun 3 '10 at 20:37

There are inherently debatable answers to most cooking questions I think. This type of question could "correctly" be answered by someone who shows opposing viewpoints adequately. – d03boy Jun 2 '10 at 4:14
